I guess you could say that my first encounter with sayings started decades ago, when I did something so silly that I...OK, I'll tell you, but please don't come after me for it. You promise?
For some reason, a teacher wanted us to use a particular pen. I noticed that a pen would fail me after a short time, so I...I'm not sure if I used a pen of my own, or a pencil. Anyway, I felt I had to use something that I thought I had to hide from my teacher. My teacher noticed anyway and had me go to a different room, to address me separately. Over time, my memory of the event has become very vague, of course, but I do remember the rhyme he tought me back then. It translates to:
How ever fast the lie may be, the truth will always catch up to her.
It loses something in the translation, probably because it only rhymes in my native Dutch. Also, you may be wondering why I didn't just ask about the pens I tried first drying up on me or if I could use a pencil, or... As stated already, this was decades ago, so feel free to put it down to me being young and stupid.
I can't say for sure, but this may well have marked the beginning of my interest in proverbs and sayings, so I started to heed them more and more. I won't go into detail because this article will get long enough even without it, but these days, I find myself thinking of this Dutch proverb:
Also, I've lately been thinking of a teaching that I thought was going to be of use to me, but it hasn't, so far.
The universe does not always provide what you ask for. The universe provides what you need.
This is a quote from Rev Bem, from the episode titled An Affirming Flame, of the science fiction TV series Andromeda.
Hold on! I've been talking about proverbs and sayings, and here I am sharing something from a TV series? The reason is that I have, for quite some time already, been collecting quotes that I believe one would be wise to live by.
I'll look for a way to add or link them in here. For now though, here's what I hope you'll take away from this article. Proverbs and sayings have come into being because of people's experiences. I believe that we would do well to learn whatever proverbs, sayings, and quotes we can find, wherever we find them. So, what proverbs, sayings, and other quotes can you find, that you think people would be wise to live by?
